How to Reduce High Water Bill – In today’s world, we all need to be more conscious of our water consumption. As plumbers, we feel it’s our duty to educate people on ways to reduce and conserve their consumption, and also assure that they are not wasting water unknowingly. It’s also because we like saving you money on your water bill, too!

One of the most common reasons for a high water bill are small and large water leaks. You may underestimate just how much even a small leak can end up costing you on your water bill. Now before you call us for a plumbing inspection, there is an easy check you can do yourself to see if you have a leak issue on your hands.

Also known as the ‘silent leaker‘, the toilet is one of the most common culprits for slowly leaking water without you ever knowing. It’s not something you can see or hear, but is often the reason for the extra dollars on your water bill.

Here is a super easy way to check if your toilet is leaking water:

  1. Add about 20 drops of food colouring/dye into the tank of the toilet. You can also purchase blue tablets for a toilet dye test.
  2. Wait at least half an hour without flushing the toilet, and then go check it. If you see any of the food colouring in the bowl of the toilet, you know you’re losing water (and money!). That’s when it’s time to give our Toronto Plumbers a call to come fix the leak and assure it’s functioning properly.

If your test proves that your toilet is not leaking, there is still another test you can try.

How to Reduce High Water Bill: Write down the reading on your water meter. Maybe do it on your way out to do some errands for a while. Do not use any water or appliance in the house that might use water during this trial time. After a couple hours, take another look at your meter. If you see it has gone up, it means there is water escaping from some point in your system.

The best thing you can do at this point is give us a call for an  inspection from your plumber Toronto. We’ll find the point of failure for you and fix it. This will help you conserve more water, reduce your water bill, and even prevent eventual damage to your home depending on where the leak is located.
