Toilet Sounds Like it’s Flushing – Do you ever hear an on and off flushing noise coming from your toilet, even when it’s not in use? If yes, it sounds like the tank might be leaking. This is not good for three reasons. First is that it’s annoying to hear the toilet flush when no one’s using it (as it could be the toilet monster), second; it’s wasting water when you should be conserving water, and third; it’s costing you on your water bill.

So here’s what’s happening inside your toilet:

No, it’s not the toilet monster.

The flapper (the valve that releases the water from the tank into the bowl) is letting water slip by, which is going right down the bowl and out of the toilet. As the water level slowly goes down in the tank, at a certain point the float mechanism will activate the siphon to refill the tank. This is the noise you are hearing.

So the toilet is going through a cycle of filling up and then slowly emptying, even when no one is using it. As you can see, this is not good.

How to fix the leaking toilet:

Right off the bat, the first thing to check is the flapper. Flappers age with time and lose their seal, so if you have an old toilet this could definitely be the reason. It’s not too hard to replace the flapper, so this is potentially something you could do yourself. Just make sure you buy the right kind.

However, it could also have to do with the positioning of tube system in the toilet. This could get a bit trickier, so if you’d like it properly taken care of to assure you will no longer have a noisy leaking toilet – or even a silent leaking toilet, give our plumber Toronto a call and we’ll be happy to help with the job.
