Winter Plumbing Problems – Over the last 19 years that we’ve provided expert service to Toronto for their plumbing and drain needs we’ve encountered our fair share of winter plumbing woes caused by cold weather.
A few weeks ago we described the issue of freezing pipes brought on by the polar vortex’s approach to Toronto, but these aren’t the only plumbing issues you can encounter this winter.
In addition to frozen pipe problems, failing hot water systems, and water line leaks or breakages are among the common plumbing issues encountered during winter.
Water Heater Not Working
When it comes time for that hot morning shower on a cold winter’s day and the only thing coming out of the faucet is frigid water, your hot water system may be failing. In order to prevent this from happening, it’s advised to monitor the temperature setting on your water heater and ensure it is set high enough to counter the dropping thermometer. Also, check to make sure the pilot light has been, and stays lit if your household operates on a gas water heater.
Broken Water Lines
Another problem derived from dropping temperatures includes water line leaks and breakages. These occurrences can severely damage your household, but can easily be prevented. Unattended garden hoses can lead to a build-up of pressure in your home’s water lines when left connected to faucets and the water within freezes. To prevent this from happening, disconnect and drain your hoses before the weather drops below 0°. Insulation wrapped around your exterior faucets also provides a degree of protection to prevent this issue from occurring, or even using the shut-off valve if you don’t plan on using them.
With the proper precautions, you can save yourselves the hassle of failing water heaters or broken water lines.
