Holiday season can mean unnecessary drain backups – Part 2

October 8th, 2010 · No Comments · by

Having holidays means having a feast with friends and family; which means you’re certainly putting more strain on your drains.

To avoid a trip from your Toronto Drain Cleaning specialists (much as we’d like to stop by :)), try to be diligent with the following things: – When cleaning/scraping off your plate(s) before rinsing them or putting them in the dishwasher, make sure you do a thorough job to avoid any food scraps from going down the drain or the dishwasher. This can cause a backup rather quickly if repeated over the course of several plates

– Don’t overfill your dishwasher; obviously you’re putting more strain on it and can potentially be not doing as good a job if loaded normally, not to mention more water use because of having to run it again to clean things properly.

– Also in line with the dishwasher to avoid a repeat use, position the plates, bowls, etc facing the centre of the dishwasher to ensure maximum coverage from the water

– When rinsing plates in the sink, whether you have a food disposal/Garburator or not, run the hot water for 10-15 seconds before and after use to ensure any grease, other liquids that can harden on the pipe walls, or smaller particles get broken up properly.

– In addition to the last tip, if you have a food disposal/Garburator, do not put bones, grease, potato peels, stringy vegetables, etc down there. It almost certainly will backup, and can cause the disposal itself to break down. Far too often people throw everything in there only to call us after it’s too late.

Remember, if you run into holiday drain backups, your trusted Toronto plumbing company is only a phone call away: 416 486 0000. But by following the tips above, you should ensure that you’ve minimized the potential for a drain backup, either inside or outside your home this holiday season. Here’s hoping that whatever holiday you celebrate is filled with lots of good food, good friends, and good family. In addition to that, I personally can’t wait for turkey sandwiches in the days that follow..
