How to Properly Dispose of Kitchen Grease & Oil

Many of the foods we love are rich in fats or prepared in oil. Here’s just a few examples of some major oil and grease contributors:

  • Meats: from steaks to bacon.
  • Cooking/frying oil.
  • Butter.
  • Salad Dressings & Mayonnaise.

Even scrubbing a greasy pan with dish soap won’t actually dissolve the grease – it just breaks it up into smaller particles which can then coagulate back to together within any part of the drain pipes. But to prevent sewage backups in your home or elsewhere in the system, it is worthwhile to dispose of grease and oil properly in the first place.

Here’s some good tips as to how:

  1. Thin oil is especially tempting to pour down the drain mixed with some hot water. Still not a good idea. The best solution is to mix it with another material that will thicken it better for disposal in the garbage. This might include used coffee grinds/filters, kitty litter, used paper towel, and more. It’s good to be creative when it comes to being efficient with your waste.
  2. Depending on your cooking techniques, fatty grease such as from meat can sometimes be mixed in water (example if you are boiling sausages). A good way to separate the grease from the water is to lay a few pieces of paper towel over the drain to act as a filter as you pour out the water. You can then just dispose of the paper towel afterwards.
  3. Use paper towel to wipe down greasy pans and pots rather than straight rinsing them in the sink. It will also make it easier for you to clean them.
  4. If you have too much oil to be absorbed and disposed of as indicated in Point #1, pour your oil or grease into a seal-able can or jar and dispose of it.

Now here’s some more creative ways to reuse grease and oil:

  1. Frying oil can be re-used. Just strain it after each use with a coffee filter to remove any large particles and then just seal the container until the next use.
  2. If you have plain bacon grease, pour it in a jar. It will solidify after it cools. This can then be used as a butter-substitute when cooking or even for a component in salad dressings! Mmm!
  3. Oil and grease are natural and can be composted. So if you have a compost bin you can add it there, but don’t just pour it anywhere outside as especially meat grease can attract animals and smell not very pleasant!
  4. You can also collect your grease and oil over time in a tub of some sort, which you can then take to a local recycling center that accepts grease.
